I’ve been a long time fan of HBO’s series Deadwood. If you’ve never seen it, you’re missing out on a gritty western with some of the best dialogue ever written for TV.
It's set in South Dakota in the 1870s. The show’s historical accuracy in the customs and loosely based real characters and events along with its poetic dialogue leaves the viewer needing more.
The series ran for 3 seasons and abruptly ending due unconfirmed reasons by HBO. However, there are rumors that it was due to financial reasons. The series ended leaving fans on a huge cliffhanger. The story had to be finished. It was just too good. The resulting revolt from fans included; online petitions to boycott HBO and ads ran in Variety requesting the network to reconsider.
In mid-2018, HBO announced a move to finish the series that they hoped would satisfy the fans. As a huge fan of the show, I felt like we hit the lottery! I was super hyped and embarked on binge-watching the show for the 20-ish time.
Like a lot of other HBO subscribers I had forgotten to cancel after the GOT finale and was on a tight deadline to watch before the subscription ended.
Before we get to the spoilers, my overall recommendation is that you should watch the movie.
***Alert Spoilers***
The only satisfying thing about watching the movie was the number of cast members who returned. It felt like I was attending a 13-year class reunion, catching up with old friends while judging how they have aged.
The rest of the movie was shot like a western. Slow-moving plots with very bland dialogue. It was like the screenplay writers didn’t even watch the series.
Overall, I’d recommend that if you were a fan of the show, you should watch the movie. Just don’t expect too much from it. If you’re debating whether you should rewatch the series before the movie, I’d say pass. It will just leave you more angry at HBO and disappointed. It was like ripping off a band-aid, then sticking it back on to then only rip it off again. It didn’t hurt as much the 2nd time but still sucks.
