It seems like everyone wants their own franchise cash cow these days, especially after seeing how high Marvel Studios has climbed and continues to do so. From Lucasfilms giving out multiple trilogy film deals, Amazon’s multi-season LOTR series and the franchise nobody asked for, Universals Dark Universe. While rebooting everything known to man because of lacking creativity being the latest trend, I believe some things should just be left alone. I’m not a monster movie expert but do we really need a new Bride of Frankenstein movie? No.
I feel that the main appeal for these classic black and white monster movies is the fact that they are aged. These movies helped push the film industry to new heights while shocking and mostly terrifying audiences. Though Nosferatu and The Invisible Man are dated, they’re still enjoyable to watch and give a perspective to film fans from a time we couldn’t possibly experience today. I’m not educated on classic monster movies but I have watched Nosferatu and I’m someone who struggles with lame, cheesy movies. My dad made me sit through 1981’s Clash of the Titans multiple times. Have you seen that god damn movie? Unlike Titans, Nosferatu still has an entertaining value and no mechanical golden owl. With the legendary performance of Max Schreck, it’s still a brilliant silent film. Maybe I’m just a fanboy who cares just a little too much. No, I know that I am.
Speaking of my undying love for niche nerd fandoms, would I still hate the Dark Universe if Guillermo Del Toro was at the helm? It’s honestly hard to say. After seeing The Shape of Water, my heart is quick to say yes but my brain is hesitant. I feel I could be swayed after seeing what his first movie would be because I know that he cares and gives he’s heart and creativity into projects and is not just making it for sake of millions. Most things that successfully come out of left field making that kind of money all have heart and people who care unbelievably too much about it, like me. Deadpool had this kind of success not solely because it was the first R rated superhero movie but because it stayed true to what DP is and faithfully recreated it. I know that Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau weren’t making on-set script changes and thinking, “Damn, when we finally get to Infinity War, we are going to make millions upon millions”.
I could be absolutely wrong and just be another crying fanboy. Maybe I’m no better than those god forsaken mouth-breathers petitioning The Last Jedi. If that is the case, you all will be the first to know about how much of a hypocrite I am. But I have pretty good feeling I’ll be right. Even the original head of this project dropped out because he knew it would be a flop. I’ll tell you what, let’s take a bet on how many will be made by same no name, place-holder director.
