Do we really need more Star Wars? A rant against Disney and their money grubbing ways

Christian Renzi

"I'm dead inside." - George Lucas, probably.

Enough. Do we really need another trilogy of Star Wars? Do we really need a spinoff film in between the years that the trilogy films are coming out? Do we really need a live action Star Wars series even though Jon Favreau is writing it? Some people say yes. I SAY NO. I don’t say no because I hate fun and I don’t say no because I hate Star Wars. I actually really enjoy the original

Star Wars films and I thought the Force Awakens was pretty good. I’m just so so sick of seeing the same franchises get beaten to death year after year.

Listen, this isn’t my area of expertise. Vinnie is our resident comic book and sci-fi writer for the website. I just need to vent for a second. I know that the movie industry revolves around one thing, MONEY. Studios don’t give a shit about storytelling. They care how much money a movie is going to make. That’s why they made three Fifty Shades of Grey movies. I saw the first one. In fact I watched the director's cut. It wasn’t even funny bad. It was legitimately so boring. Maybe I’ll write an article about it someday, but my greater point is that those trash films actually bring in a ton of money.

I know comparing Star Wars to Fifty Shades is a bit ridiculous. Obviously Star Wars is a much superior franchise, but I’m just sick of shit being made because it will bring in so much money. I think Daily Nerd contributor, Casey LaMarca could write a whole book on this when it comes to the Transformers franchise. Anyway, moving on.

DISNEY IS TERRIBLE. They’re starting their own streaming service which is just what we need, another streaming service with a bunch of random content and like ten good things I actually want to watch. With that streaming service they’re going to have a live action Star Wars series. It’s actually a genius idea by Disney because as much as I’m shitting on it right now I probably will watch this series when it comes out and that just makes me more mad. I’m the goddamn puppet that Disney relies on.

I just want to live in a world where video streaming is the same as music streaming. There are a ton of options out there for streaming music, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, but they all generally have the same thing streaming on them. The consumer chooses what they want based on what is most convenient for them. I have Apple Carplay in my car, therefore I chose Apple Music. This model is pretty much impossible when it comes to video streaming because now each service has its own original programming, plus whatever garbage films they have the right to stream. I also feel like they each have an annoying feature...Netflix autoplay and Hulu’s terrible interface. Now Disney is starting their own streaming service and again there will be another option with it’s own original programming.

Less is more. We have too many options right now.

I blame George Lucas for this Star Wars fiasco. He sold the rights to Disney and now he is regretting it big time. He claims they rejected all of his ideas, which might have been a good move on Disney’s part based off of the horrendous scripts that he wrote for the prequels. When it comes to George’s dissatisfaction with Disney I say, BOOHOO GEORGE. It must be so painful to watch your work be ruined after you sold it for 4 billion dollars! MOVE ON GEORGE. MAKE SOMETHING ELSE. Remember when you made American Graffiti in 1973? Do something like that. Stop pouting in terrible photos with Disney characters and make some goddamn movies that take place on earth.

"I've made a huge mistake." - George Lucas, probably.

I’m not excited for this new series. I’m not excited for a Disney streaming service. I don’t need either of those things. I would be fine with Disney just making Episodes seven, eight and nine of the trilogy and then taking a break for a few years. You can make Star Wars the next James Bond for all I care, just stop giving me these movies every single year. It’s not exciting anymore. There is something to be said about anticipation. Give us some time to collect our thoughts on the last film before you bombard us another space movie or superhero film (sorry Vinnie).
