Evangelion on Netflix, why now?

One of the most influential and textbook definitions of a cult classic anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, is coming to the Mecca of all streaming services. This show started me down my on-going anime career and to this day still remains my number one favorite show. The countless hours I spent on reddit forums trying to find episodes and torrents. Hell, I even gave my Mac a virus trying to pirate the latest Rebuild of Evangelion movie. It would only make sense that after all of this and completing my own personal collection of the series on dvd, that it would finally come to Netflix. As excited as I am, I’m left with an optimistic sense of wonder. Why now?

Briefly, Evangelion is a 26 episode anime from 1996 created by Hideaki Anno. A series known for its non-compromised animation, intellectual themes that challenge every viewer and an original plot wrapped with hidden meanings that goes deeper than most television shows today. It’s also know for its controversial last episode that confused and angered fans. They simply ran out of money and it was nothing more than a compilation of sketches, voiceovers and photos that sent Anno into a deep depression. The following year he came out with two movies to the series. Death & Rebirth, a basic overview of the entire series and The End of Evangelion, the phenomenal conclusion told the way Anno had originally meant it to be. Finally, I know I’m sorry, in 2007 Anno put out his first installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, a retelling of the original story. Or is it? Did I mention the dark religious overtones?

Are you still with me?

Finally, we’re back to why now. The Rebuild series has three movies out, one every two years since 2007. However, fans have been long awaiting the last movie for almost six years. It was starting to seem like a myth until recently when a working title poster surfaced for the rumored fourth movie that has every Evangelion fan foaming at the mouth. The entire 26 episode series and the two ‘97 movies will be coming to Netflix. I can only hope endlessly that Evangelion is finally making its steaming debut to get everyone and anyone into it before the final Rebuild movie comes out. Try to get any possible fan hooked right before the release of his long awaiting conclusion of the Rebuild of Evangelion in order to get the biggest reception possible. And maybe, just maybe, it will be released in theaters here in the US due to it's hypothetical success so I can die happy knowing I saw an Evangelion film in theaters. Maybe when it finally comes to Netflix in April we'll get a trailer for it? I will never stop wondering.
