Green Book took home the Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday. What does this mean? Nothing. It means absolutely nothing.
In ten years no one will remember Green Book. It will show up on Netflix and people will say, "What's that movie?" Then they'll google it and see it won Best Picture in 2018 and state that they have no recollection of it.
I saw Green Book. I was entertained for the duration of the film. I left the theater feeling satisfied with my viewing experience. Then an hour passed and it left my mind completely. It was gone and I never gave it a second thought. When the Oscar nominations came out I wasn't exactly shocked that it got the Best Picture nod, but I thought that there was no way it would win. It was kind of like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close being nominated. Hollywood lovvveeeess these feel good cliche flicks.
There are other nominees that have remained in my brain, long after my initial viewing. A Star is Born stuck with me. Blackkklansman stuck with me. My absolute favorite film of the year, If Beale Street Could Talk has stuck with me for months. Green Book has not.
Maybe Spike Lee shouldn't have stormed out of the Oscars when the winner was announced, but I can understand his frustration. His movie told a true story that is still relevant today without being cliche or too feel good.
Peter Farrelly is also an asshat. That has nothing to do with his movie but I just want everyone to keep that in mind.
