My Favorite Post-Rock Albums Ranked

What is Post-rock?

According to Wikipedia it's defined as: a form of experimental rock characterized by use of rock instruments primarily to explore textures and timbre rather than traditional song structure, chords or riffs.Post-rock artists typically unify rock instrumentation with electronics, and are often instrumental.

I've been listening to Post-rock for well over a decade and have decided to rank my top five albums!

5. Waking Season

Waking Season is the third full length album from Beverly, Massachusetts own, Caspian. I wasn't always a huge Caspian fan. I found their sophomore album, Tertia to be a bit boring and hallow sounding. I did a complete 180 on this band once Waking Season was released in 2012.

Their song, Halls of the Summer remains one of my favorite instrumental songs of all time. It's incredible.

I had the privilege of seeing them play in their hometown for their 10th anniversary show and it was quite an experience. They crush you with sound when live. I highly recommend seeing them. They tour in the New England area a lot and I've never been disappointed.

4. Young Mountain

This Will Destroy You is the most hit or miss instrumental band I can think of. They started out with two outstanding albums and then quickly lost me with their follow up albums.

Every so often a band will release an album that I can't help but describe as perfect. Young Mountain is one of those albums. From the moment the first piano chords of Quiet start to the final notes of There Are Some Remedies Worse Than The Disease, there is not a second of the album I don't like.

The second track on the album, The World Is Our remains one of my favorite songs of all time in any genera.

3. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

This honestly could be higher on the list just based off the artist alone. Godspeed You! Black Emperor was the first post-rock band I had ever heard. Some will say this is the best post-rock album ever written and it might just be.

The opening track, Storm made me fall in love with this genera of music. It moves in a million different directions and paints an incredible soundscape.

Godspeed is one of the strangest bands you will ever listen to but they're certainly masters of their craft.

2. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone

Explosions in the Sky has to be one of my all time favorite bands. I saw them tour on this album in the spring of 2008. Their show at Lupos in Providence remains one of the best experiences of my life.

All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone grabs you from the first second and never lets go. The Birth and Death of the Day is a masterpiece.

They opened their Lupos show with the song Catastrophe and the Cure. As soon as guitarist Munaf Rayani started wailing on that floor tom I knew it was going to be a religious experience.

1. The Earth is Not A Cold Dead Place

It has to be my number one. It's in my top five albums of all time for any artist. It's a work of art. It's a perfect album back to front. It contains perhaps the most famous Explosions song, Your Hand in Mine.

Go listen to this album. When it's done restart it and listen again. It will take you on a journey and change the way you feel about life. It remains their best work to date and I don't think they will ever surpass it.
