Nintendo Switch: The Casual Gamers Companion

Updated: Feb 8, 2018

I never thought about how broad the term “gamer” is in our modern day. Besides the obvious computing blacksmiths and multi-console moguls, we have professional candy crushers and champions of whatever in-app purchase based game is popular. Let’s say you're either of the above and decide to walk the self doubting path of picking a home console, I firmly believe that Nintendo Switch is for you because mine is permanently attached to my hands. With the Switch’s wide and ongoing range of games, adaptability and forward progress as a system, I truly think it’s the go to option for a home console.

When I walked in to my local GameStop to buy my switch I knew there were three essentials; The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 deluxe. The Legend of Zelda BOTW is an absolutely breath-taking game that redefines open world and Mario Odyssey is the most fun ive had playing a game. Like actual joyful but challenging, fun. Other great multiplayer games like Mario Kart 8, Arms and Snipperclips can all be played with the Joy-Con controller or controllers. We’ll get to that. Besides all the indie, platformer and RPG titles I’m not mentioning, Nintendo continues to add games to its eshop not usually brought to their previous consoles. Skyrim, Doom, L.A. Noir have recently been added plus sports titles like NBA and WWE 2K. You don’t have to be an RPG crazed gamer ready to bank 100 hours to find a good quality game that’s fun and entertaining. With 2018 here Nintendo has already previewed new games like Kirby All Stars and a remastered Dark Souls plus the new Nintendo Labo which I’m pretty sure, if you haven’t seen the videos, will revolutionize gaming.

I can tell you first hand, playing Zelda BOTW in my hands then seamlessly switching to the tv never gets old. The Switch lives up to the hype and really does as its advertised. The two Joy-Con controllers on the side can detach once set in the dock and can be slid into the Joy-Con Grip or for multiplayer use, both parts get a strap that splits the one controller into two. You can also buy standard shaped controllers that plug into the side of the charging dock for more players or if the small factor really gets to you and the full controller feel is needed. Whether it’s on the tv, in your hands or you whipped out the kickstand and mercilessly pwning your friend in Mario Kart on his kitchen table, the switch makes gaming anywhere possible with no compromise.

Being a devout PlayStation worshipper, it’s hard to admit how much I love the Nintendo Switch. Number one reason is when I turn on the controller my tv will turn on and even change to the correct input. Does my PS4 do that? God damn right it doesn’t. Besides my petty reasons, Hulu is a recent application added bringing it to the home console level and I’m even willing to speculate that Netflix and a Nintendo Direct streaming service will be added in the near future. The Nintendo Switch is a surprising contender against the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Being able to play a growing wide range of games and binge your favorite shows in the palm of hands anywhere you please is the perfect little luxury for the everyday gamer, or anybody for that matter.
