Top 5 Reasons To See Black Panther

Vinnie Ortez

This week Marvel Studios first film of 2018, Black Panther, comes out and this one has me feeling particularly excited. The hype feels real and more people are talking about this than I expected. Friends who I’ve been trying to get to watch GOTG have asked me if I’m going to see it. ME. With an all-star cast of underrated actors and a rich environment drawing from real African cultures, this movie will surely set itself outside of the typical Marvel spectrum. Here are my top 5 reasons why you’re going to love it:

5.Trailers (Deadpool 2?)

I’m a classic movie-goer in the sense that I fucking love trailers. I missed all of the trailers before Phantom Thread and shouldn’t have been as upset as I was. I’ve heard that there may be an official Deadpool 2 trailer aside from the teasers we’ve seen. Ant-Man and the Wasp and another Infinity War trailer will absolutely be shown but will it be the same from the Super Bowl or a new one? Even though I’m pretty sure I know what I’m in for, I’m holding out for a DP2 trailer and maybe a hidden gem will sneak in.

4.Great Director

One thing that I feel Marvel Studios does right is appointing great underrated directors to their movies. Ryan Coogler is a more than perfect choice to be at the helm of this movie. He wrote and directed both of his very well received movies Fruitvale Station and Creed, both drawing upon African American struggles and perspectives. It only makes sense that he has his hands in the writing and directing of this movie. He's won multiple awards for said films and still I've never really heard of him until now. I'm all about greatness in the shadows and I'm really hoping this movie puts him on everyone's map. Having different directors really helps give a different lens to each individual Marvel movie and something that I feel D.C. lacks but, thats for another time.

3.Last Movie Before Infinity War

Anyone who’s seen the trailer for the ever anticipated Infinity War, you know that Wakanda is a main setting. With that said, Black Panther could have a little teaser taste of what’s to come. Possibly an ending credit scene showing the arrival of the hordes of aliens we see our heroes fighting in the Infinity War trailer? We know in Black Panther, there will be two end credit scenes so one can only speculate that we will get an IW sneak peek. Could it be something as small as seeing Winter Soldier come off ice and get a new arm? Or something as massive as the ship of the mighty Thanos approaching earth a few months away from ending all life as the MCU knows it.

2.All-Star Underrated Cast

The first thing anyone notices about this movie is the mostly black cast of phenomenal actors. Other than the lead man Chadwick Boseman, we have Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Sterling K. Brown and so many more. British acting fans will be pleased to see Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis who is actually acting and not just wearing a motion capture suit. Most of these actors are award winning and/or celebrated in their field for brilliant work.

1.Rich Setting with Real Influences

The thing I love most about this movie is how they drew upon real African cultures for the setting, outfits and looks of the characters. Most of the waterfall locations we’ve seen in the trailers are based around real sites in Africa. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter took inspiration from the Himba, the Dogon and the Zulu tribes plus many others. Even Killmongers (Michael B. Jordan) chest and torso markings are taking from the ritualistic tribal tattoos of the Surma and Mursi tribes. Being rooted with such strong cultural ties is whats going to set this movie far apart from what your mind starts to think when you hear Marvel Studios.
