WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE CRAFT BEER BUBBLE NOW

Updated: Feb 7, 2018

Christian Renzi

The craft beer bubble is getting bigger everyday and it’s bound to explode.

Listen, I know that beer snobs are obnoxious. I’m guilty of it myself sometimes. I scoff at people who enjoy a Harpoon IPA because they’ve never had a Tree House Doppelganger. It’s a terrible nasty habit and I’m working on it. There is just so much good stuff out there it’s hard not to be a little pretentious about the whole thing.

In my home state of Rhode Island I can think of several breweries that are producing world class tasting beer; Proclamation Ale Company, Tilted Barn, Son’s of Liberty, Whalers, Grey Sail, and Long Live Beer Works. All of these spots can be hit in a day because the furthest you would have to drive between them is 40 minutes. Don’t even get me started on the rest of New England. Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire are all home to exceptional world class beer. I’m sure Connecticut is too but I haven’t tapped into their beer market yet.

It feels like everyday a new brewery is popping up. Surely they can’t all be good right? While there are some that are mediocre the vast majority of them are producing a quality product that I am happy to spend eight bucks a can on. But this can’t last. Nothing good can ever last this long.

I found out yesterday that Bucket Brewery in Pawtucket, RI is closing. I’ve had a couple of their beers and always thought they were pretty good. They were nice to have outside by the fire during the summer. With them closing it had me wondering whether or not the beer bubble is starting to burst. I’ve always had this theory that eventually companies like Anheuser Busch are just going to start coming in and buying up all the local breweries, inevitably destroying their uniqueness and flavor. It’s a nightmarish and scary scenario and one I don’t want to see happen. So do us all a favor. BUY LOCAL.

My favorite breweries as I write this article:

  1. Tree House Brewing

  2. Proclamation Ale Company

  3. Tilted Barn Brewrey
