Why you should be watching Legion

The schizophrenic series that is Legion returns for its second season April 3rd and you bet it has this nerd hot and bothered. In the wake of multiple teaser videos they released an official season 2 trailer that already has me eager and confused. I’m not here to spoil all of the first season, only to give you a taste of why you need to hop on Hulu and binge all 8 episodes right freaking now. Noah Hawley, creator and director better know for his Fargo series, has had more creative freedom with this Marvel series then I’ve ever seen with any other. With his unique storytelling and use of creative techniques throughout the series, it really pushed my love for it over the edge. Not just speaking as a comic book nerd but also as a wanna-be cinemaphile and what goes into the process.

David Haller, the mutant known as Legion, is the son of Charles Xavier. Professor X. Patrick Stewart. I’m confident that you know who he is and just how incredible his telepathic powers are. Being his son, David is just as powerful only he’s so beyond anyone’s level that it leaves him insane and schizophrenic. Noah Hawley took the idea of what David is and spun it in his own way. Being the creator/director he made his own universe around Legion with original characters that felt so rooted in the X-Men universe I thought I could find them in the comics. Still being connected to his comic book lineage, he gave David a background and origin all of his own with a villain (X-Men fans get stoked) that knows him better than we do. The way the series moves through 8 episodes is unlike anything I’ve ever watched. If feels as if you’re moving through the story is an erratic and schizophrenic way. You’re never sure if what you’re seeing is real, if you’re in the past or present, if you’re watching a flashback in David’s head or watching David through another character...

With a lot of these Marvel television shows they all feel like they’re covered in the same filter. They all conform to one style of action/story and there isn’t much room for originality. That’s absolutely not the case with Legion. One of the scenes, as seen above, was nominated for its work with practical and visual effects. David is confused by his powers and his mental limit reaches its bursting point and he sets off a wave of telekinetic energy. Dan Stevens, actor portraying David, said it was terrifying trying to get ready knowing all the drawers and cabinets were rigged to blow. That’s not something you don’t see with comic book shows and it’s something I love, giving it as real of a feel as it can. Being influenced by the psychedelic 60’s, naturally, there are beautiful montages of trippy mind sequences and dancing numbers that make you feel just as crazy as everyone in the show. Brilliant uses of long shots and different ways of showcasing the multiple mutant powers seen throughout the series.

I’m hoping that after reading this you’ll have some sort of influence to check it out. Legion is far beyond the caped crusader stereotype you think of when you hear Marvel and I’m positive this new season will ascend all new levels of crazy.
