First hockey blog of the year!
Today I want to talk about the very important topic of uniforms. I actually love to discuss NHL uniforms. I have my personal favorites, the Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes, and Boston Bruins to name a few, and I also have my least favorites, Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Carolina Hurricanes. Today, however I'm only talking about third jerseys, specifically the seven that have been announced so far for the 2018-2019 season.
According to a quick google search fifteen to twenty teams will be revealing new jerseys this coming season. The Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks will be facing off in the 2019 winter classic so they will also be getting new uniforms. The logos were revealed a few days ago and the Blackhawks logo is absolute trash...sorta like their 2017-2018 season. SHOTS FIRED.
In this article though I am only going to focus on the seven, non Winter Classic jerseys that have been released. Lets get to it!
7. The Carolina Hurricanes
This is bad. Real bad. The Hurricanes are a joke of an organization. I firmly believe that if the team didn't win a Stanley Cup in 2006 they would have been relocated. People don't go to their games, the team is bad and their uniforms are terrible. Black and red is definitely a cool color scheme but I'm not a fan of these gimmicky looking hockey logos unless it's the Mighty Ducks logo...which I'll get to later.
I'm not a fan of the grey on the shoulders with the Hurricane logo, which I also don't like very much. Hockey and pirates don't mix to me. There's not a lot of ice where pirates go and having a flag made out of a hockey stick just isn't working. These new jerseys won't save your franchise Carolina. Just chalk it up to another failure for the organization.
6. The Edmonton Oilers
There isn't anything particularly bad about these jerseys. I guess I don't like them because I only thought these were already Edmonton's home uniforms. I completely forgot about the orange unis that they usually wear.
I can't really shit on these jerseys because Gretzky used to wear the exact same ones when he played in Edmonton and you can't shit on anything that the Great One wore. I simply put them at number six because I find them boring and I also just hate the Oilers GM, Peter Chiarelli because he traded Tyler Seguin from the Bruins in 2013.
Boring jerseys and fuck Chiarelli.
5. The Philadelphia Flyers
I don't like the Flyers. I don't like their current orange home uniforms. I don't like their fanbase all that much and I don't like these alternates at all. Black and orange is for Halloween and that's what these uniforms look like.
We have enough black uniforms in the NHL. We don't need more. I personally would have made a white alternate for the Flyers, just like what New Jersey did...or I would have just taken the jerseys they wore in the 2012 Winter Classic and made those the new alternates...whatever.
4. The Arizona Coyotes
Let me just say that these uniforms are ridiculous. I like them, but they're absurd. Between the weird robot looking Coyote and the green shoulder patches, nothing about this jersey should work for me...yet it does.
I probably only like these for the nostalgia aspect of it. They were the uniforms the team wore in the 90s and early 2000s when I was a kid. Had I never seen these before and this was a brand new design I would probably feel different. I like these and I like the current, modern uniforms they wear today. The team is kinda a joke, so I guess their uniforms can be kinda a joke too. Sorry if I offended any of Arizona's twenty fans.
3. The Anaheim Ducks
Again, nostalgia pick. I'm just really happy this logo keeps making an appearance in the last few years. The Ducks brought it back on their orange alternates a few years ago and it didn't really work that well. This jersey looks very similar to the away uniforms they wore in the 90s. The difference seems to be that they took part of the San Jose Sharks home uniforms and blended them with the 90s Ducks uniforms.
If I were in charge I would have just taken the 90s away jerseys and made them the 2018-2019 alternates. In fact, if I were in charge I would take the home and away uniforms from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim era and just make them the teams full time uniforms. One can only dream.
2. The St. Louis Blues
Very nice St. Louis. The team is set to be pretty competitive this year and it could be the year that they finally make it over the hump. In the past ten years they have kinda been like the Washington Capitals of the west...until recently when the Caps won the cup. They've had so many good teams but just couldn't quite make it to the promised land. What better way to do it than in a beautiful new blue uniform?
I like these. They're another throwback uniform and I think they are working really well. I especially like how they don't have any orange, black, or red in them like so many other NHL jerseys today. I've always had a soft spot for the Blues and I wish them all the success until they make it to the Cup finals and lose against the Bruins in 2019.
1. The New Jersey Devils
Yes. These Christmas jerseys are beautiful. Another throwback. I'm also into the idea of having a team wear a white jersey as an alternate. They're crisp and clean looking. They don't deviate too much from their main uniforms...unlike the Hurricanes, and they do a good job of blending the modern look with the throwback style.
The Devils are a boring franchise to me. They've been pretty middle of the road the past few years. It will be nice to see them in some new uniforms this year. Maybe it will give them a a spark! We'll see...
